Latest trick by car and van thieves is to pose as police, stop a vehicle and then drive it away with the motorist at the kerb.
Essex Police has reported the theft of two vans by people posing as police complete with body armour and driving an unmarked car with blue lights, says leasing company Preston Skirrow, of Cardiff.
Now police advise motorists not to stop for an unmarked car but only for a marked up police car with the familiar lights bar and blue flashing lights.
If in doubt the motorist should call hands-free to 999 and verify the car which wants them to stop. If stopped they should not open doors or windows until they are positive it is a police officer particularly if an unmarked car, or bike, is used.
This might be particularly important for drivers of expensive cars.
